As soon as I watched the teaser trailer for (500) Days of Summer in late 2008, I knew I wanted to see it. Dannii and I went to see it together when it came out in Australia, and I immediately fell in love.
(500) Days of Summer is one of those movies that I will never tire of re-watching. There are so many things that I love about it! Here are just five of those things.
1. The story
First and foremost is the story that is told in this film. I like that it’s not your typical romantic comedy. They say it right up front: this is not a love story – it’s a story about love.
Rather than being about Summer and Tom’s relationship, this movie is about Tom and his experience of and ideas about love. Summer is a deliberately idealised ‘manic pixie dream girl’, putting the focus on Tom and what he believes Summer to be. The non-linear narrative helps you to draw interesting parallels and contrasts at different points in Summer and Tom’s relationship, and really highlights Tom’s growth throughout the movie.
It’s such an honest and relatable depiction of relationships, love and heartbreak, that is as hilarious as it is truthful. The ending isn’t a typical rom-com happy ending, but it’s optimistic and hopeful nonetheless.
2. Joseph Gordon-Levitt
I have loved Joseph Gordon-Levitt since 3rd Rock fromt the Sun and that seminal classic 10 Things I Hate About You, and he is fantastic as Tom in (500) Days of Summer. He plays the range of Tom’s emotions so well, and he looks damn good doing it.
3. The soundtrack
The (500) Days of Summer soundtrack is one of the only movie soundtracks I own. Music is used so well in the film – every song is brilliant and perfectly fits the tone and aesthetic of the movie.
My favourite track on the soundtrack is Sweet Disposition by Australian band The Temper Trap – it was used in the teaser trailer, and is featured pretty heavily in a couple of gorgeous montage scenes.
4. The cinematography
Speaking of gorgeous scenes – every shot of this movie is incredibly visually appealing. It’s just beautiful. Some sample screenshots:
Plus, this incredible musical sequence:
5. Summer’s wardrobe
Ending on a slightly shallow note, how pretty is Summer’s wardrobe in this movie? I love how everything is a little bit retro. Summer also wears a lot of blue, making Zooey Deschanel’s eyes stand out even more. Gorgeous!
